Food Blog | Omulab | Petaling Jaya

As much as I hate to say it, this is actually the BEST restaurant that I’ve been to in Kuala Lumpur …. for introverts. (XD) Probably not the feature that you were expecting to read about when coming to a food blog about Omulab, but just read more to find out why I feel that way.

Context: Came to Omulab with my sister for dinner (party of two). The following story describes my love for Omurice. During my first trip to Tokyo Japan (pretty young), my family literally ate Omurice for 5 days straight at the same restaurant just because my and my sister absolutely loved it. (Yes, my family doesn’t understand the word ‘overkill’)

Omulab Petaling Jaya Kuala Lumpur

Is it Halal?

I’ve done a bit of researching and my understanding is like such (do forgive me if it is incorrect) : Omulab as an establishment doesn’t have a halal certification (most restaurants in general don’t because it is expensive just to certify). That being said, there is no pork on the menu and their meat comes from a halal supplier.

But as always, eat at your own discretion. (But I think that this is a safe bet to go with Muslim friends/if you’re Muslim)

Where it Is

It is located along the same row as other restaurants such as Strangers at 47 (which I’m also a big fan of) and Kanna Curry House. A big landmark nearby is the SS2 Mall (although my previous experience there forces me to forgive you if you don’t use that as a landmark).

Parking is pretty hard because it is one of those narrow 1 lane parking areas. I would just recommend you to take any parking once you pass Kanna Curry House (if it is peak hour). Worst come worst, there is either the paid parking at the end of the road to the right or you park in between houses once you take a left at the end of the road.

Address: No. 7, Jalan 17/45, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

Operating Hours:

Daily - 10.30am to 10pm (Mondays off)

What it Costs

This is one of those places where you can have literally ZERO interaction with the staff and get food to your table. You do this by using the FavePay app! (Quick segway here)

As you guys know, I’m a big fan of Fave Pay for eating out, and this place is no different (use my referral code I19YC and you can get RM5 off your first purchase on the app).

There are actually codes on the tables at Omulab for each respective table! So you can literally order food from within the application itself once you scan the QR code in the app. But interestingly, one way to save money is to actually make one order and then immediately making the next order to utilise the cashback! (Tell me if there is a downside to this, because I don’t see one)

This tip is more for people who plan to just have one meal there - and you do save quite a bit - I saved RM5 by accidentally ordering both my and my sister’s food before realising my sister wanted a drink as well!

Here’s a look at my bill.

My Bill #1:

My Omu Demiglace (RM22.90)
My Sister’s Omu Mentaiko (RM21.90)
SST (RM4.48)
Total Bill #1: RM49.28 (RM4.93 cashback for my next meal, or in my case, my sister’s matcha latte)

My Bill #2:

Matcha Latte (RM12)
SST (RM1.20)
Cashback (-RM4.93)
Total Bill #2: RM8.25

Total for me and my sister: RM57.53 (Approx. RM28 per person - but this is with a drink - they offer free water here)

How it Tastes

Advice: You think you can do one of those cuts like those that you see of the man in Japan - like this video demonstration (This is KichiKichi Japan, not Omulab):

Blogpost: http://umisyam.com/eats/2013/3/the-most-awesome-omurice Omurice is a fluffy egg omelet upside down served on top of fried rice. I've been watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAawGfEhzf4 since 2010and promised myself that someday when I visit Japan I HAVE to go and try out this particular restaurant named Kichi-kichi ( http://kichi2.net/menu ) located in Kyoto.

You would be wrong. But the staff here are happy to cut it for your Instagram stories: because the following is the one that my little sister managed to take:

So for me the end conclusion of trying a bit of both of the Omurice is…. that you don’t ever order the Omurice Mentaiko.

Step 1 of all the Omurice Options!

Step 1 of all the Omurice Options!

The Omurice Demiglace is actually pretty legit. The perfect egg, a really fragrant fried rice (lots of things going on in there) and a beautiful demiglace sauce to go on top. I mean, at the end of the day, this is one of those really simple but homely (and yummy) dishes that you really wouldn’t mind on any given day. A classic combination done well!

Omurice Demiglace! (Highly Recommend)

The Mentaiko on the other hand… isn’t really even Mentaiko. To be honest, from the thickness to the taste, it doesn’t even whisper the words Mentaiko into my ear. You still get the same fried rice and egg combination, just a different sauce server where you’ll have your sauce.

A bit meh for me, but do go for the demiglace!

The Matcha Latte is one of those sweet variants (more on the milky side) where tea connoisseurs will hate because it doesn’t have that very distinctively Matcha taste, whilst someone like me who just likes sweet drinks and fails to appreciate rich tea probably enjoys it over the ‘richer’ tea (still pretty expensive for RM13.20 though).

Star Rating

7/10. Not mindblowingly good, but it is definitely good (kinda how I would describe Omurice as a whole, I guess - you know it tastes good most of the time, but it won’t be the best thing you’ve tasted in your life). Still pretty chill, the staff are there and really pleasant, there are a few complaints online about waiting time, but the Omurice is made fresh to order and I didn’t have such complaints.

Just a pretty pleasant place, in my opinion.
