Food Blog | Star Vegetarian Restaurant | Bukit Indah

So, my girlfriend has been getting into vegetarian foods so as a result of that, you guys end up with more healthy content from the Bukit Indah area! Today I’m sharing Star Vegetarian Restaurant Bukit Indah.

Context: Came here for dinner with my girlfriend. She wanted to order dishes, but do keep in mind that this restaurant’s ‘signature’ is their claypot rice. They also have zhap fan in the mornings if that tickles your fancy.

Hong Kong Style Cod Fish

Is it Halal?

I think this is a pretty safe place to come with Muslim friends/colleagues given it is vegetarian after all. I’m not sure about their actual halal certificate status, so if you’re concerned about that, eat at your own discretion.

Where it Is

It is located on the row of shops opposite S11 Hawker Center. Other landmarks close-by would be Kang Bee Hong and on the same row as Claytisfy (which I’m a fan of) and the Klang Bak Kut Teh restaurant. It’s got a red sign at the top and right before the corner hawker.

Address: 11, Jalan Indah 8/13, Taman Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor

Operating Hours:

Daily: 10am-2.30pm, 5.30-8pm (Closed on Saturdays)

What it Costs

The two of us ate for RM42.90. All menu prices are net prices (no tax, service charge added on top) and we ordered their Hong Kong style Cod Fish (RM15), Thai style tofu (RM10), sweet potato leaves (RM10), a passionfruit drink (RM4.90) and 2 white rice (RM1.50 x 2).

But you can also order their individual set meal which is basically one of the dishes (i.e. could be a Thai style tofu) coupled with rice and soup for RM9.90. I presume that the portion should at least in theory be slightly smaller for the set, but I’m not 100% certain.

Thai Style Tofu

How it Tastes

In terms of comparison to Daun Kitchen (which is right across the street), this is definitely a more homely, family style restaurant as this one is more ordering things to share, rather than Daun Kitchen’s concept which is more towards ordering individual meals.

One thing to keep in mind is that they use the same sauce for different main ingredients - i.e. a Hong Kong style Cod Fish will use the same sauce as a Hong Kong style tofu, so it’s better to think of which sauce pairs well with a certain ingredient and trying different sauces.

For the Hong Kong style cod fish, I would say the sauce tastes a bit like a sweet sambal sauce. As far as mock meat goes, it maybe doesn’t have the same texture as a cod fish, but overall, I would say as a dish it is pretty nice and works together well.

The Thai style tofu was a bit surprising for me given I thought most restaurants serve it the same way - that orange-red sauce which packs a small spicy punch. Instead, they have a green-ish sauce with their tofu that I feel is on the meh side for me. I much prefer their Hong Kong style sauce, so my personal advice is to try another one of their sauces.

Sweet Potato Leaves

Sweet potato leaves is what it is: steamed sweet potato leaves so probably not worth talking too much there.

Star Rating

6.5/10. A homely restaurant with really good service - waiter was really nice, helpful and responsive to cues that we didn’t even specifically ask for which I appreciate. Food is decent - I feel like the overall quality is slightly better at Daun Kitchen, but you don’t get that sharing aspect at Daun Kitchen so I can see certain benefits of Star Vegetarian Restaurant as well.
