Food Blog | Jibril | Publika | Kuala Lumpur

Finally back in Malaysia after a couple of years in Dubai, and was trying to think of a place to eat at Publika, and me and my friend had a meal at none-other than Jibril!

Jibril Exterior (Publika)

I’ve heard some pretty good things about Jibril - so I thought I wanted to check it out.

Halal Check

Jibril is NOT halal certified, but are in the process of getting their halal certification. However, just note that they are, as per their website, 100% owned by Malay Muslims and have suppliers that are all halal certified as per Jakim. When I was there, I think one of the defining points about the restaurant is that a majority of the customers were actually Malay at my time of eating.

Where it Is

Jibril has a number of locations around KL and JB (I’m not actually sure whether this branch is still open though) - including SS15 and Bangi, but just note that this review is more particular to the Publika branch of Jibril. It is located on the side of Publika not facing the main road (the Bestari / Edo Ichi row). But it’s pretty easy to spot, so just park anywhere around Publika and you’ll be able to find it!

What it Costs

To be fair, upon hearing the name and considering the area, I didn’t actually think that this was a local food place. I was kind of expecting a lot more Western food and cafe vibes. But their signature dish is actually their salted egg butter chicken. That’s what I had, coupled with a Onde Onde mocktail. My buddy had a Nasi Lemak Butter combo - which he said was actually really good as well!

Our bill looked like this:

Salted Egg Butter Chicken - RM18.90
Nasi Lemak Butter Combo - RM30.90
Onde Onde Mocktail - RM12.90
Coke - RM6.90
Service Charge (5%) - RM3.48
Total - RM73.10

Looking back, I would say that the RM30.90 is actually pretty steep - especially compared to the salted egg butter chicken (which is their signature). Do note that if you aren’t that big of an eater, there actually is a smaller portion (normal portion is 6 pieces for RM18.90 - which i had, there is also a portion with 4 pieces of chicken for RM16.90). They do actually have lots of other seasonal offers too, so just watch out and you can even take a look at their menu right over here!

How it Tastes

I think a short summary of how I found the food: really good! I think maybe I would have preferred if they went all in and go full unhealthy with their Salted Egg Butter Chicken as well as their Onde Onde mocktail, but I can absolutely see the reasons for why they didn’t.

Jibril’s Signture Salted Egg Butter Chicken

The salted egg butter chicken was really tasty but not jelat. Their sauce actually isn’t as heart-attack inducing as I personally would have liked (but that’s kind of the devil of what I like eating showing more than anything), but nonetheless, super yummy!

Onde Onde Mocktail from Jibril

The Onde Onde Mocktail was, as again, really well balanced. Not overly sweet but very flavourful at the same time, making it a yummy drink that I guess is worth trying just for the novelty of it. As again, I almost wish it was even stronger on the flavour profile side, but I think keeping the sweetness at that level probably keeps the most people happy, haha!

Didn’t really have the Nasi Lemak, but my friend had a glowing review of it, but you can take a look at it right over here!

Star Rating

7.5/10. I was expecting to burn a deeper hole in my pocket (although the Nasi Lemak price is a bit steep), considering what we ordered - but overall, food was great, service was fantastic as well, so I think this is a nice spot to check out for some yummy food at Publika!
