Food Blog | Ramen David | TTDI

From the founders of Dave’s Deli & Cafe Bistrot David comes a new popular Ramen spot in Ramen David. This is a new spot in TTDI - and when you’re on the same row as multiple Michelin-starred restaurants like Terra Dining and Akar, you probably need to stand out, and I honestly think that this is one of the new spots in TTDI that really deserve attention.

Is it Halal

Not halal, but pork-free and they do source their meat from halal suppliers. Their regular ramen does contain mirin - Japanese cooking wine - but there is a no-mirin option available as well, you would just have to inform them. As usual, if this is something that concerns you, do reach out to them directly and they can direct you to the dishes that would be suitable for you.

Where it Is

As mentioned before, it is in TTDI, located on the same row of shoplots as Akar and Terra Dining. Parking here is a bit of a nightmare, and you’ll basically have to try your luck and perhaps go a few rounds in order to get a parking. Lunch-hour wise, parking seems okay on the weekends if you come on the earlier end, but it does get more crowded a bit later on. One caveat about coming here would be that they actually have quite short opening hours for lunch and a queue that builds before they even open, so I do actually recommend you stopping by a bit earlier than 12 noon - when they open - to ensure that you have a seat, because they do run out of ramen bowls once sold out.

Address: Ramen David, 139, Jln Aminuddin Baki, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Wilayah Persekutuan, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

Weekends | 12 noon - 3pm, 6-10pm

What it Costs

As usual, I try to order a bit more so as to show you all more dishes from the different restaurants, so this may not entirely be representative of what two people eat, but I think I didn’t go over the top this round, as it is basically just one extra side dish. Total for two came up to RM147.40. Personally, I think it is A BIT steep at face value. You look at the price and at least by KL standards, this is probably on the pricier end, but my opinion on this is generally that this is actually one of the more worth while ramens I’ve had in a long time. You can probably skip the chicken karaage and just enjoy the Ramen but in general, as I will go into in the next section, the ramens are super delicious.

Tsukumen | RM58
Kaki Shio (Oyster Ramen) | RM58
Chicken Karaage | RM18
Service Charge (10%) | RM13.40
Total | RM147.40

You can take a look at their full menu right on over here!

How it Tastes

I had much more of the Kaki Shio, so I’ll talk mainly on that, but boy is it good. It is basically a chicken paitan - a Japanese chicken ramen soup - combined with oyster puree to give a super rich, thick - but not too thick, and delicious broth that pairs perfectly with their handmade ramen noodles. Full of flavour, but not too salty - the fact that I didn’t even have a drink on the day probably tells you that it’s not that salty on itself. The oyster in the dish is super tasty, coupled with the clams and chicken chashu make this a really tasty dish that I thoroughly enjoyed. One thing to note - whether you like it or not - is that they don’t use MSG, soup concentrate, or stock powder - so perhaps you can say that it is on the (very slightly) healthier end of ramens in KL - despite being so tasty! Added bonus of the seaweed being tasty together with the ramen.

The Tsukumen is also an interesting dish. To be honest, I’m probably not that big on Tsukumen - in the sense that I kind of like the ramen to be soaking in that broth and taking in all that flavour. The broth is made from chicken paitan and hatcho miso with an assortment of seasonings to really bring out the flavour from the broth. It is a dipping style ramen where the noodles are separate from the broth and I think whilst it is an interesting experience, I probably have a deeper appreciation for the more typical ramen style. They also have the sous vide chicken breast, two perfectly cooked eggs which just ooze out the yolk.

I would say I don’t have too much in particular to say about the chicken karaage, because naturally there isn’t so much to say about chicken karaage, but it is delicious, crispy and has a nice side of salad on the side to cut through that fried element of the karaage.

Interestingly, they also do have some dishes that they seemingly bring over from their other restaurant. I’m actually not personally so sure what those dishes in particular are, but on occasion, there would be waiters coming over from the Bistrot David side with dishes that look pretty interesting, so perhaps on your visit here you could check in on that, because I do think it’s worth checking that out too!

Star Rating

8/10. A solid 8/10. Tempted to give 8.5, but I think 8/10 will do for now. A nice and cozy ramen spot. Really yummy ramen in a nice environment, so one that I would recommend!
