Food Blog | Restaurant Shuang Siew | Taman Paramount

A quick search of the popular chicken rice spots in Petaling Jaya / Kuala Lumpur and you’ll likely see Shuang Siew, over at Taman Paramount. It’s a spot that I seriously see recommended everywhere from Reddit to lots of different food blogs. Given I had a bit of a break over the long weekend, I decided to give it a go! Here’s what I thought of Shuang Siew’s Chicken Rice!

Is it Halal

No, this is a non-halal spot, as is the case with a lot of Chinese chicken rice shops. They servce Char Siew and Siu Yoke, so definitely one of the spots for you to steer clear of if you’re eating with Muslim companions.

Where it Is

It is located over at Taman Paramount - on the same row as the notoriously popular Hawker O&S. I think naturally, one of the big complaints about coming here will be the parking for sure. If you come a bit later, or during work days, this area can generally be a nightmare to find parking at. I came here on a holiday morning - around 10am and parking was fine then, but I can imagine it being a nightmare to park at certain points of the day. If I had to suggest a parking if you’re desperate, there is a paid parking just in front of Star Grocer on the other side of Shuang Siew, so that might be worth a try if you’re desperate, but otherwise, it’s basically going around in circles and trying your luck.

I will note that it is actually much more popular to takeaway rather than dine-in, from what I see. Not too many dine-ins, but a lot of takeaways, which might be convenient if you can drop someone off to collect.

What it Costs

I will give the caveat that what I order is in no way what a typical person would order, as what I’m ordering is more just to try everything. But here’s what I ate:

Roast Pork, Roast Chicken, Steamed Chicken Rice | RM16.50
Iced White Coffee | RM4.50

The menu can be seen below:

I would say the price is slightly higher than what I see at most places, but in a way, with how popular it is, I think I’m perfectly fine with that - I don’t think that the price is seriously ridiculous.

How it Tastes

I think my general comment is that this feels like a place that cares more about the chicken that the pork. Whilst I didn’t have the chance to try their char siu, I think the stars of the meal are definitely the steamed and roast chicken. I think this is in that category of restaurant where you can’t really go wrong. The chicken is nicely cooked - not much bone - which is my complaint with a lot of the other chicken rice places I’ve had. There’s a decent chunk of meat that you’re getting good value out of what you order. The sauce is clearly also another strong point, as I think that the sauce that they pair the meats with is sublime. I think it’s definitely on the saltier end of sauces, but maybe that’s because that’s my style of sauce.

They didn’t actually serve the ginger sauce, but the ginger sauce is very strong on the ginger, but I almost wish it was more fragrant. Their chilli sauce has a unique garlic kick - although it almost feels like you’re having a chilli paste of grinded chillis and garlic - so there’s no extra element of sweetness. It’s quite different from the typical chicken rice chilli sauces (I would say not in a really good way).

Their siu yoke is a bit underwhelming. I’m a much bigger fan of those siu yoke with the crackling skin, but they made the choice to add it to the sauce so naturally the sauce would make the siu yoke skin less crispy, overall, I would say I liked the chicken portions of the dish significantly more than the siu yoke portion of the dish.

Star Rating

6.5/10. Somewhere in between 6.5 and 7/10 for me. A solid place for chicken rice. Like the chicken, might come back to try the char siu eventually. It’s a place that does the basics very well, and I think that in many ways it is one of those shops that will attract a consistent stream of regulars who love their chicken rice.
