555 Thainanese Chicken Rice | Sri Hartamas | Menu, Prices & What to Order
Today I’m really excited to be sharing with you all a new favourite of mine! This is 555 Thainanese Chicken Rice, a new Thai-Hainanese Chicken rice spot that has just opened in Sri Hartamas. Among all the more expensive Korean spots and Western cafes (including A’dough, which is actually right next door), this is a really reasonable spot to get your fix of Thai style chicken rice!
Is it Halal
My understanding is that they do not have halal certification, but they are in that Muslim-friendly category. But as always, do use your own discretion pertaining to this.
Where it Is
It is located on the row of shoplots in Sri Hartamas near the Petronas. Other shops in the area include Aunty Nat, A’Dough, Jie Mee (Wantan Mee - which some of you might know I love as well), and the old Kokomo. Parking is pretty easy here - worst come worst you go to the end of the street and turn left - and you can just park anywhere along the roadside there. The only challenge would be if it rains as the parking isn’t covered.
Address: 22, Jalan Sri Hartamas 8, Taman Sri Hartamas, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Operating Hours:
Daily | 9am - 9pm
What it Costs
With price, I think the natural thing to say is that it is cheap… for the area. Maybe not if it was in other areas, but it is definitely one of the more reasonable options in Mont Kiara. Strictly speaking, In Mont Kiara, strictly speaking, the spots that I generally go to that are on the more reasonable end of price would be 1977 Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu, and Jie Mee - and I would say that this is absolutely a restaurant that has taken over from me going to those other spots because it is just so good! Here’s a breakdown of the costs:
Chicken Pad Krapao | RM15.90
Signature Duo Chicken Rice | RM14.90
Lime Teh | RM6.90
Service Charge (5%) | RM1.89
Total | RM39.60
I think what I’ll say is eating for RM20 per person (including drink) - it is basically RM16-ish per person if you take away the drink - is actually pretty reasonable for Mont Kiara. Portion-wise, I would say it is slightly on the smaller end - there is this feeling that you want just a bit more to complete the meal (I’ve been making the habit to order the Fried Duck Egg top-up - which is fried crisp and delicious) - but I think for most people it’s more than enough.
At time of writing, the following are the prices of the rest of their dishes from their menu:
Classic Hainanese Thai Chicken Rice | RM12.90
Crispy Fried Chicken Rice Set (Whole Leg) | RM15.90
Heritage Curry Laksa | RM18.90
How it Tastes
As you will probably have guessed from what I’ve written above, I absolutely love this spot. I really like their Signature Duo Chicken Rice in particular. It is a combination of your typical hainanese chicken with a Hat Yai inspired fried chicken which is super crispy and juicy. I kid you not, the first bite I had of the fried chicken, I already knew I would be coming back regularly. I wouldn’t say that they do anything particularly special with the rice that stands out, but the dish as a whole really is delicious. They will also give you a selection of sauces - some chillis, ginger, and garlic mixes that all pair pretty well with the dish as a whole. There is also a nice soup that completes the meal. A pretty hearty soup if I say so myself. I think the fact that it has both the steamed and fried chicken is what really stands out about the dish - even though I rave about the fried chicken. It is that combination that really makes this dish really nice as a whole!
On their Chicken Pad Krapao. I would say it isn’t necessarily something I would recommend, but it’s not bad either. It packs a nice punch, but I do feel like the dish as a whole is on the drier end. I think this comes more from me liking the dish with a bit more sauce to complement the rice so it isn’t so plain, but that is much more a preference thing.
I’ve also had their fried rice on one occasion. It’s a reasonably priced fried rice that packs a lot of flavour. Nothing much more to write home about.
Star Rating
8/10. One of those rare spots that I will go as high as 8/10 for. I’ve already been back here something like 4 times, so that tells you everything. I swear it has only been open maximum for a month too. If anything, I feel like not sharing this place so it doesn’t get so crowded, but the fact is that this WILL be a popular spot in the area. One that I would highly recommend! Definitely much more for the regulars in the area rather than for those that travel from far out to try.
