Food Blog | Table & Apron | Damansara Kim | Kuala Lumpur

This is a pretty trendy restaurant, becoming what is probably one of the most hip restaurants in 2019, and I managed to finally try it at the very end of the year (New Year’s Eve XD)! Table & Apron’s fried chicken is a must have for all those looking for a delicious (and healthy) fried chicken!

Context: My parents have been trying to book this place for a family dinner for the longest time but the timings haven’t been kind to us. Luckily, I somehow managed a reservation for New Year’s Eve for dinner with a friend, so this is my full review!

Is it Halal?

No, this is a non-halal restaurant and uses wine and pork in their cooking. There are, however, some options that seem halal friendly (duck confit pasta doesn’t seem to have any non-halal ingredients inside), but of course eat at your own discretion.

Where it Is

Let me just tell you that if you’re going to eat here during a peak hour, be prepared for a blood bath (at least most of the time). The parking is pretty tough to get here. I recommend circling the street parking where Table & Apron is located a few times just to try your luck before parking elsewhere because most of the time there’s people going in and out.

Otherwise, it is gonna be a pretty long walk (and not to mention a pretty unsafe parking location) for you and your party.

What it Costs

The two of us ate a little more (how to say it) freely for this dinner since it was New Year’s Eve, so I would say most parties of two will probably not eat this much, but our total bill came up to be RM161.25 (so around RM80 per person) but I feel at the end of the day, this restaurant is basically borderline fine dining with a cozy atmosphere.

We ordered 2 starters - the Calamari & Zucchini (RM24) and the Charred Okra (RM16) - this is the starter that I see a lot of online. Then we ordered a half plate of their fried chicken (RM24) - widely lauded as the best fried chicken in Kuala Lumpur and for our mains my friend ordered a Ulam Crab Rice (RM36) and I had the Mushroom Risotto (RM39 - special menu for Christmas, so I’m not sure whether it will be around for much longer).

Water is free and service is great, always checking up on us and clearing the table when we were done with dishes. I would say a half chicken is probably best suited for 3 people because there are 3 pieces, so I guess do the maths for when you visit this place.

I would just like to add that their lunch sets are actually pretty worth - RM19 for a main dish and a soup/salad + a ginger tea (a soup a-la-carte alone is RM19, so this is actually a much cheaper way to try Table & Apron if you would like).

How it Tastes

Starting off at the very top with the charred okra and this is one that has a bit of spice on it. It almost resembles to me the Chinese brinjal dish dish that you have a lot of. The chimichurri does have a nice zing to it - so I wouldn’t necessarily call this a light starter, but one that will probably whet your appetite for the next few dishes.

Next up, the calamari & zucchini. This one actually tastes REALLY fresh. They’ll actually warn you that it isn’t fried, but rather stir fried with butter and it really is. You can taste that buttery flavour when you bite into the calamari. I believe there’s also lemongrass in this dish, so that gives it a really refreshing taste that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Then comes the star attraction - their fried chicken (which they use a buckwheat dredge with some basil. First bite and you can literally hear the crunch in your opposite number’s first bite. Really crunchy, almost luxurious fried chicken! Really clean and without any oil (you would think this is air fried) but yet it retains all the amazing texture and flavours of your favourite fried chicken. I would probably say this is the most MUST TRY thing to have here, as most reviews suggest.

I had the Mushroom Risotto and I would say that whilst I love the flavour and seasoning of the risotto, maybe it’s just me, but I like my mushroom risottos to be a bit more creamy. This one is a wet one that (I don’t really want to describe it like this, but this is my best description) is borderline like porridge. The mix of different mushrooms (especially the thin ones) are still really yummy and give this a really ‘umami’ taste to this dish’.

My buddy’s first reaction to his Nasi Ulam is “this is actually so legit”. I didn’t really get to try it but you’ve got a whole lot of vegetables and crunchy elements in the nuts together with a deceptively (relatively) large amount of crab meat that they put on top of the rice.

Star Rating

9/10. Price-wise, quality-wise, ambience-wise, service-wise slightly shy of those Michelin Star restaurants out there (not to mention this will actually fill up your tummies), but with a very homely and relaxing vibe to the place as a whole. Love the food and ambience, will definitely be back here with family at one point or another.
