Food Blog | Best Dinner Dating Spots for Students in Johor Bahru

Finding that perfect restaurant for that first date. Hmm. Challenging, huh? That’s why this is THE LIST that you should read in order to find that perfect spot for a date!

Explaining My Picks

This list is definitely not exclusively for students, but I did up this list with students in mind because I’m a student in the JB area myself! These are spots on the slightly cheaper (at least for dates and all) and more aesthetic side (I guess because that’s what younger folk - wow I really just said that - are into).

Note: These are more for ‘First Date’ spots rather than dating spots in general - that’s why they might lie a bit on the pricier side.

But some of these might be a bit unconventional - so just do keep in mind for that. Eventually I want to blog a little bit about dating, so look out for that eventually!

1. My Japanese Pick : Nijyumaru

Here’s a Donburi Bowl, but I’m a big fan of their Mapo Ramen too!

Here’s a Donburi Bowl, but I’m a big fan of their Mapo Ramen too!

I picked this first because this is actually the spot where I had my first date with my girlfriend at! I actually like this place because the restaurant itself is good and there’s a lot of things to go around and do in the area!

This is a nice place because it is a really pleasant environment with a really wide menu as well as quality food all around. But if you’re coming here, I highly recommend calling the following number: 07-558 9818 because it will be full on weekend dinner times. You can even call 30 minutes beforehand and you’ll pretty much skip the entire queue!

For me, dating (or at least in the early stages) is all about learning about your partner - this is why I’m quite against watching movies on first ‘official dates’. That’s why an additional activity that I would honestly recommend Lost in JB (I won’t lie though, some rooms are a little underwhelming) because that’s what I did on my first date!

Address: 94, Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/4, Taman Sutera Utama, 81300 Skudai, Johor

Estimated Price: ~RM60 per couple, depending on what you order

2. My Korean Pick: Sae Ma Eul

This one comes with the caveat that I actually haven’t tried it in Sunway Iskandar itself, but I know it’s absolutely great and authentic in Kuala Lumpur. This is probably one of the higher quality but authentic Korean restaurants you’ll find out there.

I think Korean BBQ is really nice because there’s something to do in between - you can grill the meat while talking, so you aren’t so fixated on talking all the time. Not to mention it feels casual talking over grilling meat. I would highly recommend their rice balls, which you guys can make for each other - they’re super delicious!

Address: 71, Sunway Emerald Boulevard, 88, Persiaran Medini 3, Bandar Medini Iskandar, 79250 Nusajaya, Johor

Estimated Price: ~RM80 per couple (most sets are around this price)

3. My Hipster Cafe Pick: Mrs Who

The fact that my girlfriend goes to the toilet, comes back to the table and gets her phone to take a selfie in the toilet speaks volume about how pretty this place is (and not just the toilet). This is the first ‘lunch date’ option that I would recommend.

This is the type of place where everyone has something to eat! I’m personally a big fan of Fried Chicken & Waffles, so this is why I actually like this place a lot. It has a lot of other dishes like your usual Aglio Olio, a Spiced Rendang Burger and even a Special Nasi Goreng for all of you who can’t stand a meal without rice.

But this place is quite isolated (there really is nothing you can walk to or do nearby except get dessert a few blocks down), so do have another plan if you want to do something else!

Address: Jalan Storey, Bukit Senyum, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor

Estimated Price: ~RM70 per couple

4. Hipster Cafe Pick #2: Tropique Cafe & Restaurant

Tropique Cafe JB Beef Burger

Tropique is great not just because of the food and the ambience itself, but also what you can do around it. This is a great place for a nice walk after dinner or taking lots of pretty Instagram pictures!

Not going to lie, this will be out of the way for most people - given that not many people I know actually stay at Eco Spring Labs, but if it is convenient, this is a great choice! Not to mention if you use The Entertainer App there is a buy 1 free 1 deal (I guess I’m just a big fan of the app - not sponsored).

Lots of great food and you can see my full review of Tropique by clicking right here!

Address: Lot D, Jalan Ekoflora Utama, Taman Ekoflora, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor

Estimated Price: ~RM80

5. Romantic Ambience on a Budget: Pizz@ Citrine Hub

Wasabi Salmon Pizza Pizz Citrine Hub

This is one of those picks where I feel they serve great food at decent prices! I actually took my girlfriend here for her birthday previously, so understand where I come from when I’m saying this.

I was actually a really big fan of their WasabI Pizza (as weird as it sounds) - but it is a salmon and wasabi pizza that just goes so well together surprisingly! But all in all, this place is a place where you can get a nice romantic ambience with good food all around, which is why I even recommended a friend to come here for Valentine’s Day! XD

You can check out my more comprehensive review of Pizz right here!

Address: Lot 1-02 First Floor Citrune Hub; Sunway Citrine Sunway Iskandar, Bandar Medini Iskandar, 79250 Nusajaya, Johor
