Food Blog | Fortune Pot Wan Tan Mee | Mount Austin

Coming to you guys back from Johor and this time it is Fortune Pot Wan Tan Mee! This is probably something that comes in between your average coffee shop Wan Tan Mee and your Din Tai Fungs, so this is a pretty interesting concept!

Is it Halal?

This is a non-halal eatery with pork incorporated into most of their dishes in some shape, way or form. Personally speaking, probably avoid this place if you’re coming in a huge group comprising of Muslim people - REALLY hard place for Muslims to eat, to be perfectly honest.

Other things they serve that might interest you apart from their signature Wan Tan Mee!

Where it Is

It is located in Mount Austin. I don’t really have too many landmarks for you to follow, but it is pretty near Morganfields and M2 Cafe Mount Austin. Parking is quite easy to find, but I do believe that by right you have to put parking coupons for this area (sometimes I’m not that sure which areas are included myself, but just in case).

Address: 2, Jalan Austin Heights 8/4, 81100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

What it Costs

A meal here would probably be just under RM10 if you don’t order any drinks because most of their specialties (the Wan Tan Mee) are RM8.90 for the regular and RM9.90 for the large. What you’ll get will be your bowl of noodles + a bowl of soup with dumplings!

I would say it probably is worth to top up the RM1 to get the large - because there is quite a big size difference (although only in the quantity of noodles rather than anything else.

There’s a 10% service charge, but you can also get 5% off the entire meal if you do the following (you need to do both):

  1. Like/Follow their IG Page

  2. Make a post (MUST BE PUBLIC) about Fortune Pot on your feed

You also have the option to top up into a set - adding fried small wanton, lava egg & pickled choisum for RM7 (I probably wouldn’t think it’s too worth it, but do you!)

But they don’t have just Wan Tan Mee, they have a few rice dishes here as well - imagine all the dishes that you would associate with Taiwan and they’ll probably have it here!

How it Tastes

I personally tried the Hokkien Flavour Wan Tan Mee and thought it was great! What I’ll say is that I think with the regular the ratio of noodle to meat is probably better - but I guess the large was still suitable for me because I eat quite a lot on average! XD

But it is a light but tasty sauce served with a springy Wan Tan Mee topped with pork and some garnish (the picture seems to have a little bit more, but I ain’t really complaining).

They actually give quite a lot of Wan Tan in their soup as well, so I really appreciate that as well!

I can kinda see that this fits into that “more comfortable than kopitiam” but “not as atas as Din Tai Fung (or bigger Chinese restaurants”, so I can definitely see the appeal of this restaurant, as it is something that most people (especially people from Johor) would probably be open to trying once in a while.

Star Rating

7.5/10. A solid 7.5/10. Good food at a reasonable price! What more is there to complain about? I actually think that there is some other cool dishes on the menu here, so I probably will eventually come back here to sample other things on the menu!
